ABOUT

Richard J. McCooey was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1930; he attended high school at Brooklyn Prep and then Iona Prep.  Richard graduated from Georgetown University in 1952.  Help us help the March For Our Lives movement by donating to them at their site https://marchforourlives.com/

He soon went on to design, create, own and operate three landmark restaurants for decades in Washington, DC,  just outside the gates of Georgetown University,  the Tombs, the 1789, and F. Scott's.   A few years later, in San Francisco, Richard was the (very proud) recipient of the Georgetown University John Carroll Award.   "The John Carroll Award is named for Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in North America and founder of Georgetown University. Established in 1951, this award is conferred upon alumni whose achievements and record of service exemplify the ideals and traditions of Georgetown and its founder." - www.Alumni.Georgetown.edu

After decades of service, Richard sold his treasured restaurants to Clyde's Restaurant Group (www.Clydes.com) through the great John Laytham; himself a Hoya.  Amazingly, Richard began a second and noted career in restaurant design for nearly 30 years!  His devoted wife, Karen, continues their design philosophy for both restaurants and homes, www.KarenMcCooey.com .

Richard dedicated his life to making people comfortable - his words - whether it be in his presence or in his restaurants.  Richard's "true north" was Love.  This site is a place where Richard's friends and family can come together to support what Richard would love to see done in his name :

Dear Friends and Family,

As summer comes to an end and we begin to think of fall, I look forward to celebrating Richard's birthday on Friday, October 14, 2016.  I am having a Mass said for Richard at our Church, Holy Trinity, in Georgetown at 7:30 a.m.  Let me know if you would like to join me.  My email address is KarenMcCooey@gmail.com.  Next week, I will be meeting with Jim Rizzo (Georgetown University C'84, Fordham University L'90) in the Tombs (of course) to begin discussing all the ideas for legacy efforts in Richard's name for 2016/2017.

As Richard would say: "See you around campus!"

Gratefully yours,
Mrs. Karen McCooey

Dear Friends and Family,

This Thanksgiving season, we reached our goal of $18,000- so that the Georgetown University Rowing Teams can purchase the new and safe launch they always wanted.  It will be christened the "Richard McCooey" in the spring of 2015.  If it weren't for all of you this wouldn't have happened.  Importantly a few Anonymous Ones really stepped up (!)
Thank you too to Linda Lovas Hoeschler and Mike Driscoll for allowing me to help.  There is gratitude all around.

Gratefully yours,
Mrs. Karen McCooey
